WILLIAM HENRY IRELAND’S SHAKESPEARE

Samuel Ireland, a bookseller was one of the big enthusiasts of Shakespeare and devoted his life to tracking down all the plays of Shakespeare, ignoring his son William Henry Ireland (1777-1835). Negligence by Samuel Ireland continued until his son William Henry Ireland bought a legal document signed by Shakespeare himself from the law office. William Henry Ireland was just 18 years when he bought a document from the estate paper of a client who wished to be unknown just for gaining his father’s Samuel Ireland attention. Samuel Ireland started appreciating and giving attention to his son founding’s, due to which he continued bringing documents belonging to Shakespeare which included an unknown historical drama “Vortigern”. On 2nd April 1796, Samuel Ireland arranged for Vortigern to be performed at Drury Lane Theatre. The owner of the theater’s allowed to play to go on instead of being in doubt about the genuineness of the play but the play was never performed again. Later on, William Henry Confessed that the play and other documents were all his thoughts but his father refused to believe him until he died
