Course Introduction

CURRICULUM MODULE 1 – INTRODUCTION TO FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY
In this module you will gain an overview of forensic psychology along with its meaning, significance, and scope. You will learn the role of forensic psychologists in legal contexts, including their involvement in investigations, court proceedings, and psychological assessments. The module also covers the limitations of the field and the methods in which you can apply psychology principles in a legal context. Finally, you will learn about the ethical considerations and professional responsibilities to maintain standards required in forensic practice.

MODULE 2 – ROLE OF PSYCHOLOGIST IN LEGAL SYSTEM
This module focuses on the role of forensic psychologists in understanding victims and their experiences within cultural and social contexts. It examines the concept of victimology, including the psychological impact of crime on individuals. The module also explores different forms of victimization, particularly psychological victimization, and how these experiences influence behavior, testimony, and recovery. Emphasis is placed on understanding victims from both a legal and psychological perspective.

MODULE 3 – INTERROGATION AND CONFESSION
In this module, you will gain insights about interrogation processes within criminal investigations, along with techniques used by professionals during interviews and interrogations and their application in general criminal cases and specialized areas, such as terrorism investigations. The module also examines the psychological aspects of confessions, highlighting the factors that influence individuals to confess. The module pays special attention to the phenomenon of false confessions, exploring their causes and implications in the justice system.

MODULE 4 – INVESTIGATIVE TECHNIQUES
This module introduces you to the key investigative techniques used in forensic psychology and criminal investigations. It covers the principles and application of tools such as polygraph testing and narcoanalysis, along with their effectiveness and limitations. The module also explores brain mapping techniques like BEOS profiling and provides an overview of advanced methods such as layered voice analysis. The module also discusses the ethical, legal, and scientific concerns associated with these techniques.

MODULE 5 – OFFENDER PROFILING IN CRIME INVESTIGATIONS
This module explores the principles and practices of offender profiling in criminal investigations. You will learn psychological approaches to profiling and how to apply them to understand criminal behavior, particularly in violent crimes. The module also covers different profiling techniques, including the classification of organized and disorganized crime scenes. It also discusses the limitations and challenges of offender profiling, which will help you in understanding its role and effectiveness in modern investigations.
