Kim Hedrick's Case Study

Kim Hedrick's case was a perfect example of how forensic nursing practice can help victims come out of trauma and live a meaningful life.

Her life came to a standstill when she was attacked, violently beaten, bitten, and repeatedly raped. She suffered from permanent hearing loss in one ear and became afraid to leave home.

Honor Health's Forensic Nurse Examiner Program played a great role in helping her recover from the trauma and start enjoying life again.

The forensic nurse appointed to handle her case was extremely soft-spoken, conducted an in-depth medical forensic examination after the assault, collected evidence, and explained to Kim each step of the investigation and the reason behind it. The nurse showed concern about the incident and her injuries and put her at ease during evidence collection. She also told her the significance of photographing her injuries and holding conversations with the detective.

The nurse spent time collecting enough resources to testify as a witness.

The thorough examination of the assault conducted by the forensic nurse had a huge impact on this case. Kim’s attack happened after her third meeting with the attacker, who had earlier also sexually assaulted other women. During the trial, all three victims were present. However, he was found guilty only in Kim’s case.

The attacker, a horrific serial rapist, was successfully prosecuted and imprisoned. This gave her strength to move forward, bringing joy back into her life. And all this happened due to the invaluable efforts of the forensic nurse.

Note: This is only a glimpse of one of a few case studies that we might cover. All case studies are subject to change as per current trends and developments, except a few famous ones from the past.
