George Peter Metesky (Mad Bomber) Case Study

George Peter Metesky, also known as the Mad Bomber, was an American electrician and mechanic. For 16 years (1940s and 1950s), he planted several bombs in New York City at places like phone booths, movie theaters, libraries, and public buildings like Grand Central Terminal, Radio City Music Hall, the New York Public Library, the RCA building, the Port Authority Bus Terminals, the New York Public Library, Pennsylvania Station, and the New York City Subway. Though all the explosive devices planted by him did not explode,

He always made calls to the buildings where he used to plant the bomb. However, he never discloses the exact location of the bomb. He even threatened to plant more such bombs by writing letters to newspapers and used to leave a note with the bomb that never revealed his motive behind choosing that location. He used gunpowder-filled pipe bombs whose sizes ranged from 4–10 inches (10–25 cm) in length and 0.5–2 inches (1–5 cm) in diameter. The timers were made using flashlight batteries and cheap pocket watches. He transported these bombs to the location in wool socks or even hung them from a railing or similar structure.

This case was becoming day-by-day harder for the New York City Police Department (NYPD) to resolve. And this led to the development of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Catching him at the earliest gave rise to the immediate implementation of criminal profiling. After studying, psychologist James Brussel concluded that since he has enough understanding of explosive devices, he must be an engineer, most likely at Con Edison. His statement drew the attention of the police towards George Metesky. A forensic psychologist’s accurate analysis of a criminal’s profile led to a manifold increase in demand for such professionals.

In 1957, he was detained on the basis of letters written by him to a newspaper. Legal investigations proved him to be insane and in need of being admitted to a mental hospital. Bitter experiences and events in his life were found to be responsible for his current mental state.

Note: This is only a glimpse of one of a few case studies that we might cover. All case studies are subject to change as per current trends and developments, except a few famous ones from the past.
