Introduction to Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances

The word Narcotic is derived from Greek word Narkitos meaning "to be numb" in other words to numb the senses. It is defined as a depressant action on Central Nervous System (CNS), which relieves pain, produces withdrawal signs and symptoms when the drug is stopped. Opium contains about thirty-five alkaloids out of which Morphine is the most important one. Indian Opium contains 2-10% Morphine. For prosecution under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985 (NDPS Act 1985) only the identification of heroin in brown sugar is required. The complete drug profiling would include identification and quantization of all the components by analytical techniques like micro chemical tests, Enzyme Multiplied Immunoassay Technique (EMIT), Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC), IR Spectrophotometry (IR) etc. Nalline tests and laboratory analysis indicate drug addict. "Addict" means a person who has dependence on any narcotic drug or psychotropic substances. Medicinal cannabis that is medicinal hemp means any extract or tincture of Cannabis. Designer drugs are class of synthetic drugs similar to the controlled drugs synthesized by chemist working in Clandestine Drug Laboratories. Fentanyl analogs, Meperdine analogs and MDMA (3,4 - methylenedioxy) are known class of Designer drugs.
